LEARN ABOUT BOURBON DISTILLING
Meet one of the South’s iconic traditions, bourbon distilling. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a collection of bourbon whiskey distilleries located in Kentucky. Begun in 1999 as a way to bring tourism to Kentucky, this tour gives visitors an up-close look at how bourbon is distilled, the history behind the crafting of bourbon, and the art behind the perfect bourbon tasting. Whether you are interested in history, cooking, business, agriculture, or art, this trip is perfect for you. We are positive that our Kentucky Bourbon Trail tips will make your trip memorable.
To get the most out of this trip, three days or more is recommended. The best time to visit the distilleries is in cooler weather, fall or spring, it’s less crowded, and you’ll miss the heat of summer in Kentucky. BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY
Start your journey in Louisville, and get oriented with the history of the trail at the Bourbon Trail Welcome Center. A few blocks away is the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, the first distillery on Bourbon Row. You don’t want to miss Angels Envy, located in the heart of Louisville; it’s downtown Louisville’s first fully operational whiskey production facility. Before leaving town, Jim Beam is considered a "must stop" location for anyone traveling with a bourbon trail travel guide itinerary.
After a long day, My Old Kentucky Home will be a delightful respite. Originally a 1,300-acre plantation, the wooded forests and rolling hills of this beautiful campground are the perfect end to a perfect day. After waking in this peaceful area, be sure to visit Heaven Hill Distillery. This iconic home to many award-winning bourbon brands is another highlight recommended in any bourbon trail travel guide.
Next, head into Bardstown for lunch, Kentucky’s second-oldest city, and considered one of the most beautiful small towns in America. After spending some time in Bardstown, travel down the road a bit to Maker’s Mark and see the story behind the iconic wax-topped bottle. The last stop of the day is your home-away-from-home at the pastoral Marion Fair RV Park. By this point of the bourbon trail trip, most travelers are already writing down their favorites.
For a full day (or two!) of distillery stops, start with historic Four Roses Bourbon. Here you’ll enjoy the quiet Kentucky countryside and charming Spanish-style architecture while tasting their award-winning bourbon. Only eight miles away, you’ll find Wild Turkey with an impressive visitor center and rich history. Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve are not to be missed; both are registered historic landmarks. The location to park your RV for the night is none of than the Kentucky Horse Park. Worth a visit on its own with attractions like horse shows, museums, and rides, this facility also offers spacious and lovely RV sites. This historic area is especially memorable in any bourbon trail travel guide!
End your journey in Lexington, the second-largest city in Kentucky, and home to the University of Kentucky. If you haven’t had enough distilleries, there are two here worth visiting: Barrel House Distillery and Lexington Brewing Company , the only place on the trail where you can taste both bourbon and beer; this is clearly the perfect final chapter to your bourbon trail trip that you won't forget!
